WATER PLANTS

TRIFFID PARK WATER PLANTS

When you receive your water plants pots from Triffid Park (not Patio Pots), these MUST sit in water at all times.  Any sort of trough or tray that will hold water.
Fill the trays with minimum 1-2 inches of water.
Because these are water plants, overhead watering once a day is not enough to keep them wet.  They MUST sit in water.

This also shows your customers that they are Water Plants and not pot plants.

OXYGENATING WATER PLANTS

Oxygenating water plants, like all plants provide oxygen in the daytime.  At night this process is reversed and they use some of the oxygen as they respire.
The benefit of this is that they absorb nutrients such as ammonia, nitrates and nitrites as well as other minerals and salts, thus conditioning and balancing the water in the pond.  If these are allowed to build up, they can become toxic to the fish and other aquatic life.  Algae’s also like to use nutrients to grow and take over the pond, so the oxygenating plants act like nutrient sponges and stop the algae’s taking over.
Our oxygenating water plants are:

Mares Tail – Hippuris vulgaris – Vic and SA only

Water Milfoil – Myriophyllum papillosum

Water Ribbon – Triglochin procera

TRIFFID PARK PATIO POTS

No pond is required for either the nursery or the customer.

Just place the patio pot in the full sun and keep topped up with water.

However these can also be fully submerged in a pond.

Now anyone can grow water lilies on the patio, balcony, in the garden, or in a pond.

Easy to transport.

Easy to market.

When you receive your Patio Pots, they will have very little water in them for transport.  These need to be filled to the top of the pot with water.  The leaves of the plants will then float back up to the surface and look their best for sales presentation.

CARNIVOROUS PLANTS

WHAT NOT TO DO:

DON’T:  Feed your plant insects

Use insect sprays near your plants

Keep closing traps.

Use ordinary potting mix

Fertilise with plant food

WHAT TO DO:

DO:         Sit in a dish of water at all times

Put them in a morning sun position

Inside or outside under porch etc.

Fertilise with a weak solution of SeaSol

Repot only in sphagnum peat moss

(Venus fly traps, Droseras and Sarracenias only – Nepenthes need to be potted in a mixture of orchid bark, sphagnum peat moss, sphagnum moss and perlite.)

Carnivorous Plants attract, capture, kill and digest most often insects for their nutrition.

Carnivorous plants fill a niche in nature by growing in soil that is            deficient in nitrogen (an essential element for plant growth).  Few other   plants can grow here.  They overcome this deficiency by catching, killing   and digesting nitrogen rich insects.

If you catch an insect and stick it in the plant, it won’t know it has caught it, and therefore won’t digest it.  The plant needs the thrill of the catch to release its digestive juices to break down the insect.

In a home situation, with the plants growing in small pots, you can help the plant a long a bit by feeding it Seasol and Powerfeed mixed together every 8-12 weeks during Spring, Summer and Autumn at about 50% of the recommended rate.  DO NOT use or recommend any other fertilisers.

WHERE TO DISPLAY YOUR CARNIVOROUS PLANTS

Carnivorous plants need a nice brightly lit area in your nursery.  Usually inside your gift shop is too dark.

They need protection from the hot afternoon sun, and protection from the wind and rain.  So under cover is best.

Carnivorous plants are bog plants, so they need to sit in a tray of water at all times.  DO NOT overhead water, or you will splash the peat moss up  on to the labels.  DO NOT allow to dry out.

With the hanging Nepenthes baskets, just keep some water in their basket saucers at all times.

In winter, Sarracenias and Venus Fly Traps go dormant.  If you have some left in your nursery, cut off the dying traps about ˝ cm from the base of the plant, keep moist and they will grow back in spring.  You don’t need to keep them warm over winter because they need this dormancy period to gain strength for spring.

VENUS FLY TRAPS   (DIONAEA MUSCIPULA)

These are the crocodiles

of the plant world.  When the trigger hairs inside their traps or jaws are touched, they snap shut with such incredible strength that even the strongest insect is doomed to a slow death.

SUNDEWS  (DROSERA)

Droseras seductively lure their unsuspecting prey with a sweet

sticky honey-like substance which is on the end of each tentacle.

Once ensnared, the leaf curls around the struggling insect, and juices gush forth to digest the still living creature.

PITCHER PLANTS

(SARRACENIAS AND NEPENTHES)

Greedy Monkey Cups (Nepenthes) and Slippery Pits of Death (Sarracenias) extrude irresistible scents, either sweet and seductive, or disgusting and repungent, all designed to lure unsuspecting insects to a ghastly gruesome end, by drowning in the plants digestive juices.

            THE FRENCH TRUFFLE TREES

GROWING CONDITIONS FOR TRUFFLE TREES:

Before planting - prepare your soil.  This is very important.  Truffles thrive in hungry, lime-based soils.  To enable your tree to produce truffles the pH of the soil must be 7.5.   You can amend the soil, using hydrated or garden lime.
Hydrated lime is fine to use on your truffle trees, but can burn your skin if you get it on you.
Garden lime has low toxicity and is safe for the home gardener to use.

Different soil types react in different ways to the application of lime.  To increase your pH by 1.0 point and make your soil more alkaline:
Sandy soils - add 135 grams of lime per sq. metre
Loamy soils - add 270 grams of lime per sq. metre
Clay soils - add 400 grams of lime per sq. metre
Peaty soils - add 850 grams of lime per sq. metre

Once you have your soil conditions right, add a generous helping of lime to the soil or potting mix once each year, usually in spring, it doesn't really matter on the time of year, just don't forget.

The trees will grow to about 10 metres tall.  If you have space you can plant your truffle tree directly in the ground, which would be preferable long term.  If you don't have room, or want to take your tree with you if you move house, you can grow the tree in a large pot or half wine barrel.  Use a better grade potting mix, and add lime to raise the ph as described above. You can prune the foliage to keep the tree at a manageable size when planted in a large pot or half wine barrel.

The truffle inoculation and lime both have an impact on slowing down the growth of your host tree.  So the tree will be a lot slower growing than an non-inoculated tree.  But remember, you are growing truffles, not trees, so keep the ph up.

You can plant at any time of the year.  Plant in a sunny aspect in free draining soils.  North, South, East or West, it doesn't matter as long as they get sunshine on the ground over the root system.

Keep the lower foliage well pruned to let the light onto the soil.
Do not prune the roots, as that is where the truffles form.

Truffle's prefer cold winters and can tolerate frosts, with hot summers.  Don't forget to keep the ground moist with water.  How much and how often you water, depends on the growing conditions.  If you want to mulch to help keep the tree moist over the summer while it is smaller, this is ok.  However as the tree matures, 5-6 years, remove the mulch to allow more sunlight to the roots.

Fertilizing - use a general purpose 3-4 month slow release fertilizer.  Do not use a "Native" fertilizer.   You can also use seaweed, fish emulsions or worm leachates, which will stimulate the bio-life in the soil.   Feed in spring and summer.

Truffles will grow anything from around 20cm under the soil, to almost popping out of the ground.  Truffles can grow from just 2 centimetres in diameter to the size of a grapefruit.  Truffles start to grow in the warm summer and ripen in the cold of winter usually from June to August in Australia.
As for how many truffles you can expect off your one tree, it is up to the "Truffle Gods"!  The above factors will come into play as to how many you will produce.

In terms of which tree to purchase, it is a personal choice.  They are all great host trees for the truffles, so it is a matter of whether you want a deciduous or evergreen tree.
English Oaks in particular are prone to aphids which you can spray with pyrethrum.
English Oaks and Hazelnuts also tend to get a fungus on their leaves.  Do not spray this with anything, or you will kill the truffle spores which are also a fungus.  In Autumn these leaves will fall off anyway as the tree goes deciduous for winter.

Hazelnut trees will give you an added bonus of Hazelnuts as well as Truffles.  Hazelnut trees contain separate male and female parts on the one tree, but are unfertile and require at least two Hazelnut trees to cross-pollinate.  Plant at least one other variety of Hazelnut tree as a pollinator  within 30 metres of each other.  The pollen is transferred between  the trees by the wind.

"Can I purchase the truffle spore to inject my own trees?" - NO, the truffle spore is injected directly into the tree as the first shoot comes out of the acorn (before it is even a tree) under laboratory conditions.

The trees in 220mm gold pots are about 4-5  years old, so your waiting time for truffles is approximately another 3-4 years.
